What Should You Know About Replacement Water Filters?

By Peter Abertoning

When you're buying a water filter should you worry about the cost of replacement cartridges?

With the Ralph Nader Institute estimating up to 2100 toxic chemicals in our drinking water there's no doubt you need a good water filter, the best in fact.

But when you look for water filters you'll find that some need regular replacement of the filter cartridge. Is this an issue?

What needs to be replaced is the cartridge that actually holds the filter medium. From time to time this cartridge become clogged with contaminants and wont work as effectively as it once did, or if left too long can even block up completely.

This is good. This means that the water filter is working and the contaminants that you would otherwise be drinking are now captured in the cartridge. When you throw the cartridge in the trash youve just thrown out all the impurities that you would have drunk. You can feel good about this.

But it costs money to buy replacement water cartridges and some people choose their water filter based not on choosing the best water filter but on the cost of the cartridges. And that's not the best way to choose your water filter.

Theres a couple of things you need to think about before buying a water filter that needs replacement cartridges. The first is that you are buying a water filter to filter out impurities and keep your water healthy to drink. You need to be buying the best water filter, regardless of the cost of the replacements or you are compromising the quality of your water because of cost. Buy the best, not the cheapest.

But for many people cost is an issue regardless. And for them there is great news.

The best filters that money can buy are in fact not the most expensive water filters, and even if you factor in the cost of replacement cartridges they are extremely cost competitive.

Water filter comparisons show in fact that the best water filters cost around 9.6 cents per gallon to use, with other comparable filters costing up to 25 cents per gallon, all costs considered.

With 10 water filters tested the best water filters actually came out the cheapest of all to use, and they use replacement filters.

So if you're looking for a water filter and have decided to avoid replacement water filters because of the cost think again. The best filter is a replacement water filter, and it's also the cheapest.
