Celebrating Memorial Day Weekend

By Kristen Thorpe

The year is simply flying by and believe it or not, this weekend is already Memorial Day weekend. Weve celebrated Mothers Day and Fathers Day will be here before you know it. In between these parental holidays is a three day holiday weekend (for most people anyway) where we start to say goodbye to spring and start the summer season off with a road trip or a backyard barbecue.

If the weather is cooperative, many of us will be doing our best to spend the weekend doing things outside as much as possible. Some lucky people will spend the day out on a boat fishing or water skiing. Others will spend the days hiking or picnicking in a park with family. Or maybe take a drive to the beach and have fun playing in the sand and surf. A perfect way to enjoy a sunny day.

There are many people that have decided to stay around home for the long weekend so they can just hang out at home and relax. Sometimes after running around all of the time during the week its nice to have nowhere to go - to just kickback and relax. And the best part of staying local is the money thats saved on hotels and gas " plus there arent any traffic headaches to deal with either.

For simple fun at home its a great time to break out the classic backyard family games like badminton, volleyball, horseshoes, and water pistols. If youre lucky enough to have a swimming pool, thats even better. Or you can just pump up those great new inflatable pools, hop in and enjoy as much fresh air as you can. Seriously, after running around all week its really nice to keep it as simple as possible.

Of course you cant have Memorial Day without firing up the barbecue. It can be anything from the classic grilled cheeseburgers and chili hotdogs with some fresh ears of corn-on-the-cob on the side. Or you can cook up some teriyaki tuna steaks or some grilled juicy steaks. Dont forget the fresh mouth-watering watermelon. The great part of cooking out on the grill is that theres so much less mess to clean up in the kitchen.

So keep your weekend as relaxing and enjoyable as possible by buying your food and toys before the weekend arrives. Dont forget to check the fuel on your grill too. If you get the errands out of the way then you wont have to deal with spending your entire Saturday in the stores. Instead, you can be resting in a lounge chair in your yard.
